Members of the Lay Carmelite Community in Apopa are involved in formation as the group continues to expand. Apopa is a municipality in the department of San Salvador and is the seventh biggest city in El Salvador.
Twenty-eight Lay Carmelites make up the community. It was formed two years ago from a confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Their formation at this time involves learning about the life on Mount Carmel, Elijah, Mary, the movement to Europe, and the transformation from hermits to mendicants.
The coordinator of the Lay Carmelites with the Carmelites of Centro Xiberta is Br. Cecilio Hernandez, O. Carm.
